PRESS RELEASE BY THE MINISTRY FOR EUROPEAN FUNDS, SOCIAL DIALOGUE AND CONSUMER PROTECTION European funds: a pillar supporting Maltese businesses at the forefront of innovation

The Government is placing European funds at the heart of its efforts to make Maltese businesses more productive, innovative and competitive. Through the Business Enhance schemes under the European Regional Development Fund, more than 700 projects are benefiting from approximately €45 million in grants, translating into investment of around €90 million. This investment is helping enterprises modernise their operations, increase productivity and create new economic opportunities.

This was announced by the Minister for European Funds, Social Dialogue and Consumer Protection, Keith Azzopardi Tanti, while addressing the Ahead Step One conference organised by the Malta Chamber of SMEs. He stressed that supporting small and medium-sized enterprises is a direct investment in the country's prosperity, as they generate more than three-quarters of Malta's economic value added and employ around 140,000 people. The conference provided an opportunity to highlight the importance of innovation, digitalisation and European funds in strengthening the competitiveness and sustainable economic growth of Maltese businesses.

In this context, artificial intelligence received particular attention in the Minister's address. He maintained that it is also becoming an essential tool for small and medium-sized enterprises, offering opportunities to improve efficiency, increase productivity, reduce costs and enhance customer service. These technologies can help businesses adapt to market needs, make more informed decisions, and create new growth opportunities.

“For a small island economy, we must compete through innovation, agility, quality and technology. Our vision is to help businesses become smarter and better prepared for the opportunities and challenges of the future," Minister Azzopardi Tanti emphasised. He added that the latest Business Enhance instruments support digitalisation and investments related to artificial intelligence, including automation, data analytics and advanced technological solutions.

The Deputy President of the Malta Chamber of SMEs, Philip Fenech, emphasised the importance of conferences such as this in preparing small and medium-sized businesses for current challenges. “Today's conference focused on helping businesses become more efficient through digitalisation and AI. We specifically invited speakers to engage with our members and explore the EU funding available through the Government," Mr Fenech added.

The conference provided a platform to strengthen efforts towards more innovative and resilient businesses, with a clear message: investment in modernising enterprises is an investment in workers, quality jobs and Malta's future prosperity. The conference highlighted the importance of continued collaboration to translate the opportunities offered by European funds into tangible results for Malta's economy and society.
